What does the NDCB do?

The NDCB is responsible for and retains authority for granting, maintaining, recertifying, expanding, and reducing the scope of certification under the Certified Professional Doula (CPD) credential. This is one kind of doula credential and does not apply to or affect doulas who have other types of certificates or training.

Who is the CPD Certification for?

We recognize that doulas represent a wide range of individuals and that many doulas are not interested in seeking a certification of this kind. But for those who do wish to have this as a part of their practice, the NDCB offers two distinct pathways toward certification.

Is the CPD Credential a License?

The Certified Professional Doula credential is not a license, nor does it pertain to any state or federal regulatory board. The NDCB is not affiliated with any government or related organization.

Is the CPD exam online or in person?

The Certified Professional Doula (CPD) Exam is completely online.

When does my CPD certification expire?

Your CPD certification expires 3 years from date of issue.

Where is my CPD certification accepted?

Your CPD certification is a nationally recognized certification that can be used by individuals of any race or background. We are committed to ensuring that our certification process is unbiased and inclusive for everyone.

Do I need to pay an annual membership?

No. There is no annual membership fee.

What are the fees?

How long is the exam?

The CPD Exam is 140 multiple questions, and candidates are given 2.5 hrs to complete the exam.

Do I need to apply for certification before I take my training?

No. You will apply for certification after you complete your training.

I have a question about my application status, who do I contact?

You may track your application status through Prolydian. If you have any questions, you may contact the NDCB by emailing info@doulaboard.org

When will I know if my application has been accepted?

The NDCB will notify applicants of status within 30 days of receipt.

I missed the recertification deadline; do I have to re-apply and take the test again?

Yes, if you miss the recertification window, your CPD certification becomes null and void. You will need to re-apply and test again.

Are their accommodations for testing?

How many CEUs do I need each year?

You will need 20 CEUs for recertification every 3 years.

What if I don’t pass the CPD exam?

You will be eligible to re-test with an additional fee. There is a limit of 3 attempts, and then the application will be declined, and candidate will need to re-apply.

Can I take the CPD exam if I was trained by an organization not listed on the approved list?

Yes, you must follow the Self-Guided pathway for applicants.
